The shade is shaped into a sunburst, a ring of tapering petals in cast aluminium, and the light is thrown upward onto the ceiling rather than straight down into the room. What comes back is reflected light with a pattern of shadow around it, which gives a flat ceiling something to look at and gives the room a softer, less clinical kind of brightness.
Aluminium is doing real work here rather than just looking the part. It carries heat away from the LED module, which is what allows a flush fitting with no air gap above it to run for long periods without the output drifting. The body is finished in white, purple or blue, so the fitting can either vanish into the ceiling or sit against it as a piece of colour.
Because it mounts flush it suits rooms where a pendant would be in the way, low ceilings, hallways, stairwells, bedrooms with a high bed, or a landing where anything hanging would be caught.
